This film relates the story of the creation, disappearance and reappearance of one of the most mysterious of paintings in the history of Western art. Why, at the request of the Turkish diplomat Khali Bey in 1866, did Gustave Courbet paint “the most naked of nudes” ? How did the champion of realism make this painting into a manifesto on realism in pictorial art ? What fate was the painting subjected to between its disappearance and its entry into the collections of the Orsay Museum in 1995? In the 19th century, it was considered obscene and even today, it is considered provocative. The film answers all these questions and throws a different light on the work of Gustave Courbet.
