TIMGAD, LIFE AT THE HEART OF AURES

  • Amor Hakkar
  • 2002
  • 52 min

This film is about Amor Hakkar’s return to Aurès, where he was born and which he left soon after. In it, the director shares his vision of the region’s past. We discover the extent of Roman-Berber remains of the antique city Timgad and understand the issues at stake in the preservation of the many threatened sites, along with those – even more numerous – that are still buried. The film unravels like an investigation, following the passion of a committed player (the Timgad site’s curator) passed on to other people in the region and especially the night watchman for whom the stones and vestiges come to life… For Algerians living in the Aurès region, simply concerned with living or surviving, does it make sense to appropriate and understand history and the signs of a past that still carry messages today?
