For his first production of the classical tragedy, Luc Bondy has chosen the refinement of simplicity in order to stage a “realistic Phèdre”, as close as possible to the tormented energy and sensual violence of Racine’s masterpiece. Didier Sandre plays a thrillingly regal Theseus. As for Valérie Dréville, physically trapped in an interminable state of agony, haughty or convulsed, childlike or inhuman, inhabiting the poem with her whispers or cries, she is an unforgettable Phèdre.
