When the Old Man passed away, four contenders went after his power : the Heir, the Adopted Son, the General and the Opponent. Based on the conflicting accounts of its key players, “Once Upon a Time in Ivory Coast” retraces the power struggle that has shaped the country’s contemporary history since the death of its founding-father, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, in 1993. Step by step, with a touch of irony, the documentary uncovers a deep-seated plot against democracy that was bound to escalate into civil war.
