A model of cynicism and infamy, a coup de théâtre with abysmal consequences, the Hitler-Stalin pact of August 23, 1939, was the appalling outcome of a vast collective failure. Cowardice in the face of Hitler, visceral repulsion between the West and the USSR, absurd choices, incompetence on the part of some and blindness on the part of others: an inexorable descent into hell that the most lucid of the actors were unable to halt.
